Cosmetic Dental Associates is a San Antonio dental clinic that is mostly known for its outstanding dentistry and superior customer service. Most patients, however, are unaware of our efforts in the community.
We look for opportunities within the community to make a difference in the lives of others. CDA has participated in various causes and events over the years.

3rd Annual Oral Cancer Foundation Walk/Run for Awareness
On Saturday, April 13, 2013, team 33Smile rallied together to represent Cosmetic Dental Associates in the 3rd Annual Oral Cancer Foundation Walk/Run for Awareness. Sixteen staff and guests participated in the 5k through San Antonio’s O.P. Schnabel Park, with one of our team members, Nathan Perez, placing 3rd in his division. Dr. Moore and CDA are committed to the prevention, early detection and treatment of oral cancer and encourage everyone to include an oral cancer screening as part of their annual dental exam.
100% of the proceeds went to benefit The Oral Cancer Foundation, with the event raising over $30k. For more information about this organization, as well as educational materials about oral cancer, please visit www.oralcancer.org.

2012 Annual Boxer Boogie!
On Sunday, October 21st 2012, twenty-four family and staff, as well as seven dogs, participated in the 2nd Annual Boxer Boogie. The event was a 3k/5k through McAllister Park, with 100% of the proceeds going to support the Alamo Chapter of Austin Boxer Rescue. This was a fun time for all in attendance, where we got to get out and exercise while benefitting a great cause. The CDA team, lead by Dr. John Moore, is committed to helping area rescue groups in their efforts to make San Antonio a no-kill city.

Dog walking at Animal Defense League
In May of 2011 three of our staff attended and got their volunteer certification from the Animal Defense League of Texas: Carol, Colin and Alice. They have volunteered at least 15 hours and have walked and bathed over 30 dogs, and played with the cats in the cattery. This is a great shelter that is doing it’s part in finding forever homes for their animals.

Volunteering at the animal shelter
On Sunday, November 21st, 14 CDA staff members went and volunteered at a local animal shelter. We walked the animals, cleaned cages, donated plastic bags, brought treats and gave love to as many animals as possible. We spent the afternoon walking dogs, 23 in total! We also played with the puppies and rabbits. This was a great day for the staff here at Cosmetic Dental.

Running for the cure

Food drive
In November 2010 CDA helped a Brownie from Troop 454 in their efforts to help San Antonio Food Bank’s “Food 4 SA” campaign to collect a million pounds of food and help make a Happy Thanksgiving for thousands of families in need. Our staff and patients contributed a large box of food, totaling 121 lbs, for this campaign. This was a third of what was collected up by the troop! We are grateful to be able to contribute to giving many families a Happy Thanksgiving this year.
Truth About Drugs event
On August 4th we flew one of our staff members, Jenni to Fort Pierce, Florida. She worked with Harvey Lee Jr., who previously played with the New York Yankees. He is retired from the sport now and is a teacher. He is active in speaking out against drug abuse and got 20 teens to sing a song called Say No to Drugs. Approximately 50 people where there. The whole purpose of the event was to raise the awareness on drug use by children and to help them see the importance in saying no to drugs. It was a very successful event with 50 children and a class of 70. in all 120 children were given the information on drugs.

Dental health awareness lecture
June 2010, three CDA staff members presented a dental education program to students at Southwest High School. Two of the staff members educated the students on the importance of dental hygiene and treatments. They also presented educational paths for those interested in pursuing an education in the dental field. The students were educated on the different career options they would have if they pursued a career in dentistry. After the presentation there was a short Q&A session with the students. Most of the students were very interested in pursuing a career in dentistry, and the different treatments there are. Based on the feedback from the students, the presentation was a great success.

Drug Prevention Presentation
Throughout 2010 CDA staff did three classes to junior high and high school students educating them on the harmful effects of drugs. The goal was to give enough information to the student about drugs so that they could make an educated decision about it. These classes were delivered at the George Gervin Academy and the Technology Institute here in San Antonio. One of the classes was to refugee students and was translated for them in to their language (4 different languages: Swahili, Burmese, French and Arabic). All students who attended these classes were given their own copy of an educational documentary DVD as well as an information booklet. The response was very positive from all three classes!

Walk to Cure Diabetes
Cosmetic Dental Associates joined thousands of participants in the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation’s Walk to Cure Diabetes on October 17, 2009. Many of our employees supported the cause by raising donations and bravely facing down the 5K walk. The scenery was beautiful and the weather was perfect, which set the tone for what would turn out to be a fun and charitable event. This was an important cause for CDA because our patients or their families can be affected by diabetes. During the event CDA passed out free samples of dental products and information about gum disease, which is a common health problem for diabetics. People with diabetes are prone to some possible health issues including gum disease and poor healing or oral tissue; therefore CDA was more than willing to lend a helping hand to raise money for research. CDA also held a drawing and the lucky winner received a free exam, x-rays and consultation. For over 30 years, JDRF has been the largest charitable funder of type 1 diabetes research worldwide. It is renowned as an extremely valuable medical research organization and is very effective in directing donor dollars to its mission of finding a cure. Not only was the event fun, but it was also successful as CDA was able to raise funds for research and awareness about proper dental hygiene.

Texas Donated Dental Services
Since 2001, Dr. Moore has been a member of Texas Donated Dental Services. Donated Dental Provides dental care for the less fortunate, and elderly who cannot afford to receive mandatory treatments. Patients submit their cases to the web site, and register online or in person to become a candidate for these services. Once the patients meet their requirements, their cases are then submitted to the doctors. The doctors review each case they are given, and choose the patient that is financially and medically unable to receive the treatment otherwise. Since 2001, Dr. Moore has contributed over $21,000.00 to the Texas Dental Association Smiles Foundation cause.
“Dear Dr. Moore and Staff:
I cannot thank you and your staff enough for all of the hard work you put in on behalf of AF.
It is the generosity of people like you that inspires me to come to work each day. Thank you for giving Andre and myself a reason to smile.
I look forward to working with you in the future.
Happy, healthy smiles…
That’s our mission!Ashley Authement
TXDDS Case Manager”
Donations
CDA has donated a great supply of dental products to charities and organizations over the years. In 2007 CDA donated dental hygiene bags and products to an orphanage in Russia, and made a monetary donation to Agnes Cotton Elementary. This donation was done two years consecutively, and allowed the students to have a Christmas party and a gift of their choice. In 2009, CDA donated dental products to MacArthur High School for their annual graduation event, Project Graduation.

DNA LifePrint Identification Kit
In February 2005, CDA held a DNA swabbing event for a missing child program. Dr. Moore and our CDA assistants came in on a Saturday to swab the children’s mouth. America’s Most Wanted host John Walsh and Joe Matthews teamed up to create the DNA LifePrint Identification Kit to help in identifying and finding victims. This remarkable technology is becoming more common among parents. This was a great service to our community and we are proud to be a big part in helping parents.
